Did you know that your child should be seeing the dentist every six months just like you do? It’s true! At Long Family Dental we want to begin seeing your child around their first birthday so we can begin to monitor their oral health and development. It may seem early, but it helps your child begin acclimating to the dental office, which sets them up for future success. We also encourage parents to bring their little ones along to their own dental appointments. This helps your child see that the dentist in Midlothian is not a scary place.
Why Treat Baby Teeth?
You may wonder why it’s so important to take good care of your child’s baby teeth when they will eventually fall out? This is a great question, and many parents are not aware of the important work that baby teeth do for your child such as:
- Helping them learn how to eat solid foods
- Holding space for and guiding adult teeth into place
- Helping them learn to talk
For these reasons, if your child’s baby teeth become decayed or damaged, we will recommend a dental crown or filling to repair their tooth.
Additional Service For Children
As your child gets older, we may recommend some additional services that will benefit their oral health. Fluoride treatments will help to build and strengthen small teeth, while also helping to remineralize teeth that may be starting to decay.
Dental sealants are a tooth colored coating that will cover the chewing surfaces of their teeth in order to protect them from decay. We find that dental sealants greatly reduce the number of cavities our young patients experience.
If your child participates in sports, our doctors can discuss the right protective wear or mouth guard for their teeth and mouth. Did you know that sports are responsible for 40% of dental emergencies? Many accidents or injuries can be avoided with the right mouth guard.
