By making mindful lifestyle choices, you can ensure your implants stay in great condition for decades. Read on to learn how to properly care for your newly restored smile!

Do: Brush and Floss Regularly

Thankfully, dental implants are easy to maintain. Brush at least twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and floss to remove plaque and food debris. Pay special attention to the gum area around your implant, as plaque can still cause gum infections even though the implant itself won’t decay. Healthy gums are essential to the longevity of your implant.

Don’t: Use Your Teeth as Tools

Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bottles. While implants are strong, applying unnatural pressure can chip or crack them, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Always use the proper tools for such tasks.

Do: Add a Waterpik to Your Routine

A Waterpik or water flosser is an excellent addition to your oral care routine. These devices use a gentle stream of water to clean hard-to-reach areas, making them particularly effective for dental implants. Unlike traditional floss, Waterpiks won’t fray or get stuck around your implant, ensuring thorough cleaning without damage.

Don’t: Smoke

Smoking is one of the worst habits for your oral health, especially when you have dental implants. Research from the National Library of Medicine shows that cigarette smoke promotes bacterial growth, which can harm the gums and jawbone surrounding your implant. Over time, this can lead to infections and implant failure. If you smoke, quitting is one of the best steps you can take for your overall health and the longevity of your implants.

Do: Cut Food into Manageable Pieces

Once your implants are fully fused with your jawbone, they can handle most foods, including tougher items like steak. However, it’s wise to cut food into smaller pieces to minimize stress on your implant. This reduces the risk of unnecessary wear and tear.

Don’t: Overindulge in Hard, Sticky, or Gritty Foods

Hard foods like ice, raw carrots, or nuts can put stress on your implants and other teeth. Sticky items like taffy or gritty foods such as popcorn kernels can become lodged in difficult-to-clean areas, potentially irritating your gums or leading to plaque buildup. While you don’t need to eliminate these foods entirely, consume them in moderation and take care to clean your teeth thoroughly afterward.
